Philosophers Index Abstract

Two relations of supervenience1, "weak" and "strong supervenience2," are distinguished and their strengths compared. What supervenience3 between two families of properties entails about the existence of property-to-property connections between the families is considered in detail, and its philosophical implications discussed. It is shown that "global supervenience4," i.e., The supervenience5 relation defined in terms of "possible worlds," is equivalent to "strong supervenience6." Some applications of the supervenience7 concepts are considered.
