Philosophers Index Abstract

The first part of the paper traces the evolution of the supervenience1 concept (including a discussion of its relation to the concept of "emergence"), and reviews the recent literature concerning this concept. In the second part, the following three aspects of supervenience2 are distinguished and discussed: supervenience3 as a relation of property covariance, supervenience4 as a dependency relation, and supervenience5 as a nonreductive relation. The problem of "explaining" specific supervenience6 claims is also discussed.
