Philosophers Index Abstract

Nonreductive physicalism arguably is the "received view" on the mind-body problem. This paper argues that it shares with emergentism many of its core tenets, and like emergentism it is committed to "downward causation1". It further argues that downward causation2 has consequences that no physicalist should, or could, accept.
