Editors’ Abstract

  1. Toshisada Nishida is professor of zoology at Kyoto University. Since 1965 he has been studying chimpanzees at Kasoje, at the foot of the Mahale Mountains, in Tanzania. His major interest has been in social organisation and relationships among chimpanzees.
  2. Here he briefly outlines why his long experience of watching chimpanzees has led him to support the Declaration on Great Apes.
