Editors’ Abstract

  1. Roger and Deborah Fouts founded the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute at Central Washington University, Ellensburg, Washington. Among the chimpanzees living at the Institute is Washoe, the first chimpanzee ever to communicate with human beings by means of a human language.
  2. Their personal account of their experiences with chimpanzees provides striking evidence of the remarkable intellectual abilities of these apes - and of the equally remarkable resistance of many human beings to the idea that other apes can be so like us.
