Philosophers Index Abstract

I defend John Dupre's thesis of "Promiscuous Realism" about natural kinds1 against two objections by T.E. Wilkerson. First, I show that ordinary language classification is no more (and no less) concerned with practical interests than is scientific classification. Second, I show that the predictions and explanations provided by ordinary language classification are not invariably inferior to those provided by scientific classification.
