Philosophers Index Abstract

  1. This paper is an attack on the modern doctrine of Russellianism according to which, if the object of a putative singular thought fails to exist (e.g., through hallucination), then there is no thought.
  2. The reasons behind this doctrine are examined and found wanting, and arguments are adduced against it.
  3. There follow discussions of different perspectives on descriptions of thought-content, methodological solipsism, twin earth examples, and the identity-conditions of demonstrative thoughts.
