Unfortunately, it is unclear just what the doctrine says. In this paper, I criticise several different ways of stating <a name="2"></a><A HREF="../../Notes/Notes_0/Notes_24.htm">animalism</A><SUP>2</SUP>, and put forward one formulation that I find more promising. </ol></FONT><BR><U>Brief TT Comments</U><ul type="disc"><li>Johansson s list of supporters of <a name="3"></a><A HREF="../../Notes/Notes_0/Notes_24.htm">animalism</A><SUP>3</SUP> includes the usual <a name="4"></a><A HREF="../../Notes/Notes_0/Notes_50.htm">suspects</A><SUP>4</SUP> of Ayers, Carter, David Mackie, Olson & Snowdon, but included:- <ol type="1"><li>John McDowell and</li><li>Derek Parfit, <BR>& in addition to confirming support for the doubtful cases of </li><li>Trenton Merricks,</li><li>Peter van Inwagen, and</li><li>David Wiggins. </li></ol> </li><li>The definitions of <a name="5"></a><A HREF="../../Notes/Notes_0/Notes_24.htm">Animalism</A><SUP>5</SUP> that Johansson considers <U><A HREF="#On-Page_Link_P19893_6">are</A></U><SUB>6</SUB><a name="On-Page_Return_P19893_6"></A>:- <FONT COLOR = "800080"><ol type="1"><li>All persons are animals.</li><li>All persons are identical with animals.</li><li>We are identical with animals.</li><li>You and I and all other persons of the same substantial kind as us are identical with animals.</li><li>You and I are identical with animals.</li><li>Any person coincident at some time with an animal is identical with that animal.</li><li>There are persons coincident with animals and any person coincident at some time with an animal is identical with that animal.</li><li>There are persons who share some proper parts with animals and any person who shares some proper parts at some time with an animal is identical with that animal.</li><li>There are persons who share all their proper parts with animals (at some level of decomposition) and any person who shares all his or her proper parts at some time with an animal (at some level of decomposition) is identical with that animal.</li><li>All human persons are identical with animals.<BR></FONT>Johansson s preferred definition(s) is / are:- <FONT COLOR = "800080"></li><li>All typical human persons are identical with animals.</li><li>All or nearly all human persons are identical with animals. </li></ol></FONT></li><li>He also considers three definitions of  <u>Human</u> Person . x is a human person =df. & <FONT COLOR = "800080"><ol type="1"><li>x is a person who relates to a <a name="6"></a><A HREF="../../Notes/Notes_12/Notes_1265.htm">human animal</A><SUP>7</SUP> in the way that you and I do.</li><li>x is a person who can move a <a name="7"></a><A HREF="../../Notes/Notes_12/Notes_1265.htm">human animal</A><SUP>8</SUP> just by intending to move and who is able to perceive the physical world via alterations to the sense organs of a <a name="8"></a><A HREF="../../Notes/Notes_12/Notes_1265.htm">human animal</A><SUP>9</SUP>.</li><li>(i) x is a person who can move a <a name="9"></a><A HREF="../../Notes/Notes_12/Notes_1265.htm">human animal</A><SUP>10</SUP> just by intending to move and who is able to perceive the physical world via alterations to the sense organs of a <a name="10"></a><A HREF="../../Notes/Notes_12/Notes_1265.htm">human animal</A><SUP>11</SUP>;
