Aeon Abstract

  1. This past February1 [2016], physicists working on the LIGO experiment reported the discovery of gravitational waves, spacetime ripples predicted by Einstein’s general theory of relativity. It was instantly hailed as a sure bet for a Nobel Prize.
  2. But 47 years earlier, a now-forgotten pioneer wowed the world with exactly the same claim. Janna Levin recovers this piece of lost history in an exclusive excerpt from her new book.
