- Ling Introduction:
- The history of Armenia goes back thousands of years. Even today, you can still find relics of Roman times still standing. It is this long history that has shaped the country to what it is today and, importantly for us, developed the Armenian language. So then, what is it like to learn Armenian?
- Spoken by approximately 6.7 million people, Armenian is a unique language that forms the only language of its branch under the Indo-European tree. While the country itself only has a population of around 3 million, the millions of Armenians abroad keep the language as their native tongue. In terms of the alphabet, it is said to have been initially introduced back in 405 AD.
- The Armenian language can best be split into two different dialects - Western and Eastern. While there are some differences in pronunciation between the two, the fundamentals remain the same. There is no grammatical gender, for example. Likewise, verbs are heavily conjugated, though the number of grammar types changes between the dialects.
- With its unique history and alphabet, Armenian may prove to be an interesting language to tackle. However, by doing so, you will be able to open up the rich history of the country, and learn more about the culture and the people. In the end, it is well worth while to learn Armenian, no matter the reason for doing so.
