Notes

  1. This is a set of five series of short discussions – usually 10-15 minutes – between Robert Kuhn and various luminaries on the topic of Persons and Selves.
  2. I know a lot about the views of some of the interviewees. Others I know, but didn’t know their views on PID. Some few I’d not heard of at all. Most I respect, and it’s interesting to see them in live action.
  3. I could have set this up as a pseudo-book, and may do in due course if the write-ups warrant it.

Editor’s Introductions
  1. What Are Persons? (Part 1)
What does it mean to be a 'person'? How do persons differ from other living things? Must all human beings be persons? Always? When does personhood start — during childhood, at birth, in the womb? Are you a person when asleep? Are people with severe mental deficiencies still persons? Severe brain injuries? What's the importance of persons, anyway?
  2. What Are Persons? (Part 2)
    Abstract as above.
  3. What are Selves? (Part 1)
What does it mean to be a 'self'? What characteristics distinguish a self from a non-self? What are the boundaries between self and non-self? Is there a difference between a self and a person? What follows from the existence of selves?
  4. What are Selves? (Part 2)
    Abstract as above.
  5. Is the Person All Material?
What makes a human a 'person'? What provides our sense of unity and continuity? While most assume that to be a person is to have a soul, most philosophers — and some theologians — assert that persons are all material. What's the role of consciousness in personhood? To be a person, must a person be conscious? If consciousness is all material, must a person be also?
