- Ling Introduction:
- For many people, Greece is a paradise. It is a collection of islands with white buildings overlooking the sea with the warm sunlight blazing above. It also has a long and interesting history, with many kingdoms and empires occupying the area. Greece is an amazing destination everyone, including holiday goers looking to try the best gyro and history buffs looking to learn more about the country.
- The Greek language is actually quite unique and forms its own branch of the Indo-European language family. It is spoken in Greece as well as Cyprus and Albania to a certain extent. It is also used extensively by the scientific community for coining new words and names. There are more than 13 million speakers of Greek as a native language worldwide. It uses its own Greek Alphabet of 24 characters.
- Greek follows an SVO word order, but this can vary depending on the sentence. It uses a complex inflection system that sees nouns, verbs and adjectives change based on the case. It also has three grammatical genders, masculine, feminine, and neuter. Verbs are inflective and conjugate based on different categories such as aspect and tense.
- Thanks to a lot of tourism, English is quite common in the tourist orientated cities. As you start to leave these areas however, you will find that English speakers are harder to come by. In addition, a lot of the history is written in the Greek language and so for the best chance to learn as much as you can, learning Greek is a good idea.
