Baker (Lynne Rudder)

This Page provides links to the Books and Papers (including Book Chapters, where I have itemised these) by this Author contained in my collection. Clearly, there may be many more works in the Author's oeuvre that I don't possess. An introductory note on the Author appears first. In case of misclassification, or ambiguous classification, authors of the same surname as this Author are listed for easy access. If any (other) Authors, Books, Papers or Notes in my collection cite this Author, a table of links is provided before the list of the Author's works. Scroll down or follow the links above.

Author Narrative:
  1. Lynne Rudder Baker is one of the primary authors I need to consider for my Thesis on Personal1 Identity, in particular with reference to her Constitution View2.
  2. I have (or will have, eventually) discussed her in this Note3, so there’s no reason to go further here.
  3. Websites:-
→ Her (rather rudimentary) Wikipedia Page is here: Wikipedia: Lynne Rudder Baker, while
→ Her academic page appears to be at: University of Massachusetts Amherst: Lynne Rudder Baker. This lists (presumably all of, and has links to many of) her writings.
  4. Sadly, her Wikipedia page indicates that she died on 24th December 2017.
→ Her obituary page at UMass Amherst is here: UMass Amherst: In Memoriam Lynne Rudder Baker
→ And a tribute (referenced above) is here: Monticelli - For Lynne Rudder Baker
  5. Baker was a Christian Materialist4. The above links reveal her to have been an Episcopalian.
  6. For the majority of Baker’s works, see the lists below. Those that – for one reason or another – I DO NOT HAVE5 copies of are:-
    • Autism and 'I'. Journal of Consciousness Studies, 22(11-12):180–193, 2015.
    • Constitutionalism6: An Alternative to Substance7 Dualism8. In Jonathan Loose, JP Moreland, and Angus Menuge, editors, The Blackwell Companion to Substance9 Dualism10. Blackwell, 2018.
    • Explaining Beliefs: Lynne Rudder Baker and her Critics, Anthonie Meijers, Ed. CSLI Publications, Stanford, 2001. (Critical essays by others). See Link. The Amazon Description is “In the past the philosophy of mind has been the view that mental states are identical with, or constituted11 by, brain states. Lynne Rudder Baker has been a critic of this view, developing a theory grounded12 in practical realism. This is a critical look at her views and critics, with her replies.” So, it’s not central to my concerns, and I have the two essays by Baker.
    • Must Anselm Be Interpreted as a Meinongian. In John A. Keller, editor, Themes from Peter van Inwagen: Being, Freedom and Method, pages 263–273. Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2017. See Link.
    • Ontology, Down-to-Earth. Monist, (98):145–155, 2015.
    • Our Place in Nature: Material Persons13 and Theism. Public Lecture, University of Birmingham, March 15, 2013
    • Pereboom's Nonreductive Physicalism. Philosophy and Phenomological Research, 86(3):738–746, 2013. Book Symposium: Consciousness and the Prospects of Physicalism
    • Persons14 and Human Nature. In Agustin Fuentes and Aku Visala, editors, Conversations on Human Nature, pages 220–231. Left Coast Press, Walnut Creek, CA, 2016.
    • Persons15 and the Natural Order. UMass Undergraduate16 Philosophy Club, November 10 2005. Presumably similar to the slightly later "Baker (Lynne Rudder) - Persons and the Natural Order".
    • Primitive Persistence17 of Persons18 Over Time. In Valerio Buonomo, editor, The Persistence19 of Persons20: Studies in the Metaphysics of Personal21 Identity Over Time, pages 41–53. Neunkirchen-Seelsheidj: Editiones Scholasticae, 2018.
    • Reply to Charles Chastain. In Robert H.Grimm and Daniel D. Merrill, editors, Contents of Thought (Proceedings of the 1985 Oberlin Colloquium), pages 26–30. University of Arizona Press, Tucson, 1988. This links to "Baker (Lynne Rudder) - Cognitive Suicide; Comments by Charles Chastain; Reply", so I may have it!
    • Resurrecting Material Persons22. In Benjamin Matheson and Yujin Nagasawa, editors, Palgrave Handbook of the Afterlife23, pages 315–330. Palgrave MacMillan, London, 2017.
    • Review of Making Objects and Events: A Holymorphic Theory of Artifacts24, Actions, and Organisms by Simon Evnine, Oxford University Press. Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews, October 20 2016.
    • Review of "The Self25: Naturalism26, Consciousness and the First-Person27 Stance" by Jonardon Ganeri. Review of Metaphysics, 67(1):160–162, 2013
    • Should the Humanities Be Saved? UMass Magazine, Winter 1999
    • Swinburne on Substance28 Dualism29. European Journal for Philosophy of Religion, 6(1):5–15, 2014.
    • The Hand of Nature in the Glove of Phenomenology. Australasian Review of Philosophy, forthcoming.
    • Updating Anselm Again. Res Philosophica, 90(1):23–32, 2013. Baker’s link is dud.
