BOOK ABSTRACT:

Inside Cover Blurb

  1. Essays on Freedom of Action brings together original papers by contemporary British and American philosophers on questions which have long concerned philosophers and others: the question of whether persons are wholly a part of the natural world and their actions the necessary effects of causal processes; and the question of whether our actions are free, and such that we can be held responsible for them, even if they are the necessary effects of causal processes.
  2. The essays by Anthony Kenny, David Wiggins and Ted Honderich give general and different answers.
  3. Mary Warnock appraises the view of human freedom which we owe to Jean-Paul Sartre; John Watling examines and criticizes arguments by Stuart Hampshire; and Harry G. Frankfurt considers threats and offers, both of which may be thought to pertain to our freedom.
  4. Donald Davidson defends the view that freedom to act is a causal power of persons; David Pears writes of the rational explanation of actions and psychological determinism; and D. C. Dennett presents a view of mechanism and responsibility.
  5. This volume will be of interest not only to those who are primarily concerned with philosophy but also to students in those many other disciplines in which freedom and determinism arise as problems.
  6. 'It is seldom indeed that an invited anthology reaches this standard of interest and insight; it will be indispensable to those working in the area. Each of the essays deserves, and will no doubt get, careful attention.'
