- About the author: Brian Christian was born in 1984. He holds a dual degree from Brown University in computer science and philosophy, and an MFA in poetry. His work has appeared in both literary and scientific journals. In 2009, he competed with the world's leading artificial intelligence2 software at the international Turing Test competition, where he was awarded the prize for 'The Most Human Human'.

- There were only four “confederates” (humans) in the 2009 Turing Test – so being the most human human isn’t saying that much.
- Brian Christian’s view is that – even if Moore’s Law continues to be satisfied – the situation with the Turing Test isn’t the same as with (say) chess. Even if, one day, a computer should satisfy the Test, there’s no reason why it should continue to do so if human beings improve their humanity – that is, try to be less robotic during the test. That’s how Brian Christian managed to achieve his accolade. Unfortunately, with chess, human beings are already (more or less) at their peak performance.
- There was much of interest in chapter 10 (“High Surprisal”) – about information theory – in particular, about compression and auto-completion (in texting) – there’s an analogy between this and the Turing Test itself. The more surprising a text is (to be), the less accurate will be auto-completion, and the less effective compression.
- Information Theory and entropy are important issues for me – so I ought to get a technical understanding, starting with Shannon. Some books:-
