This is not anarchy, this is blindness.

A driver waiting at the traffic lights goes blind. An ophthalmologist tries to diagnose his distinctive white blindness, but is affected before he can read the textbooks. It becomes a contagion, spreading throughout the city. Trying to stem the epidemic, the authorities herd the afflicted into a mental asylum where the wards are terrorised by blind thugs. And when fire destroys the asylum, the inmates burst forth and the last links with a supposedly civilised society are snapped.

Jos Saramago was born in Portugal in 1922 and has been a full-time writer since 1979. His oeuvre embraces plays, poetry, short stories, non-fiction and novels, which have been translated into more than forty languages and have established him as the most influential Portuguese writer of his generation. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998.

BOOK COMMENT:

Vintage Classics, London, 2005

Text Colour Conventions (see disclaimer)

Blue: Text by me; © Theo Todman, 2018

Mauve: Text by correspondent(s) or other author(s); © the author(s)

© Theo Todman, June 2007 - August 2018.

Please address any comments on this page to theo@theotodman.com.

File output: 02/08/2018 05:06:00
Website Maintenance Dashboard

Return to Top of this Page

Return to Theo Todman's Philosophy Page

Return to Theo Todman's Home Page
