Summary of Progress since Last Report

Little work has been undertaken over the last three months. However:

  1. I attempted a summarisation of "Carter (William) - Artifacts of Theseus: Fact and Fission". However, it took a very long time to do part of it, and this wasn’t done well, and cannot be the right way to go. I need to think of a better (ie. less slavish) approach.
  2. I received a query1 on the relationship between personal identity and morality; answered, but with no feedback.
  3. I spent some time on the “correcting authors’ names” task – including cataloguing chapters of books where this seemed relevant and hadn’t yet been done. This is very time consuming, and I only completed half a book-case. While it would be useful to have completed the exercise, there are almost always likely to be more interesting and pressing tasks to perform, so this is very much a background task.
  4. I’ve started to look into Thomistic substance dualism (via "Moreland (J.P.) & Rae (Scott) - Body & Soul - Human Nature and the Crisis in Ethics") as it’s (sometimes) alleged to be:
    • An implication of Biblical teaching, and
    • A pre-requisite for any possibility of resurrection.
I take it that if these bullets are correct, then the possibility of Christian resurrection is empirically falsified, since substance dualism appears to be false. But I need to check this out.
I’m looking forward to my first supervision to provide direction in the appropriate next steps. I suspect one / all of:
  1. Investigate the meaning of “Person” in the contemporary literature (probably starting with "Dennett (Daniel) - Conditions of Personhood").
  2. Write up a critique of Animalism2 based on my current understanding & reading to date.
  3. Write up the marginalia for books / papers already read, but in a more time-efficient manner.

Rationale for this Project

I am researching the subject of Personal Identity primarily because of its intrinsic interest and importance. It is really a sub-topic in my Philosophy of Religion project. Additionally, I hope to acquire a PhD in Philosophy from Birkbeck at the end of my research (or at least at an appropriate point within it). This PhD is neither an end in itself, nor the usual means to an end; I do not want a job in philosophy at the end of the course. It’s intended to teach me research techniques, provide focus and direction, and furnish a professional qualification should I want to publish any results in this or any other area of philosophy.

Summary of Progress to Date

All work to date has been preparatory, though I think I’m now ready to start serious research.
