Rationale for this Project

I am researching the subject of Personal Identity primarily because of its intrinsic interest and importance. It is really a sub-topic in my Philosophy of Religion project. Additionally, I hope to acquire a PhD in Philosophy from Birkbeck at the end of my research (or at least at an appropriate point within it). This PhD is neither an end in itself, nor the usual means to an end; I do not want a job in philosophy at the end of the course. It’s intended to teach me research techniques, provide focus and direction, and furnish a professional qualification should I want to publish any results in this or any other area of philosophy.

Summary of Progress during December 2007

December 2007 was my third month back at Birkbeck. It was very disappointing (though term was only two weeks). I missed both Graduate Seminars on account of pressure of work and had made so little progress on my essay that I postponed my final supervision until the New Year. I have since suffered a near complete collapse of morale with respect to my thesis, and will need to postpone the supervision again. I can’t really explain why this is; other than it was triggered by methodological differences between me and my supervisor.

Items that have been addressed in December:-

  1. Scoped my draft chapter1 on “What are We?”
  2. In support of this, I read (but have not necessarily commented on):
  3. Rather than do nothing, I started listening to some lectures from Yale University, namely:-
  4. Commenced write-ups of
  5. Birkbeck End-of-Term Status-Report2 produced.
I have to admit that little of the above is anything more than treading water.

Time Divisions (Where, for “YTD” – Year to Date – the year commences in October 2007):

I spent 68 hours in December (255 hours YTD) on my Thesis or other Birkbeck-related work. The minimum requirement for a part time student is 20 hours / week, which would give 89 hours (263 hours YTD). Hence, my expended hours are a little low - 77% of expectation for the month (97% YTD). Moreover, of this 29 hours (123 hours YTD), or 42% (48% YTD) were spent on background activities. This means that only 40 hours (132 hours YTD) were spent on core activities. This is only 45% (50% YTD) of the minimum requirement.

The background activities include Book / Paper cataloguing, Aristotelian Society / Philos-List, Research Seminar preparation and attendance and General Admin and Status Reporting. This needs to come down, as only the Research Seminars are strictly necessary (or fall within the 20-hour / week expectation).
