Carthusian Retreatants

(Text as at 23/08/2007 14:54:14)

Carthusians aren’t really supposed to take retreatants, as the life is very easily disturbed by outside interruptions. Only potential candidates are supposed to stay. This is covered in Richard North’s book1.

When I first stayed, I was probably a retreatant, though not in the conventional sense. I don’t know whether the two retreatants Fr. Bernard refers to were tipping a toe in the water or whether they were there for spiritual refreshment. But as the letter refers to cells, they may have been either.

Maybe I was just “visiting” on my first trip, which why I was lodged in the guest house rather than in a cell.
