Rationale for this Project

Summary of Progress during January – March 2016
  1. Overview: I returned to weekly bridge with David at the end of last year, and this year have taken the game more seriously, which wasn’t altogether planned. While my NGS rating went up a bit, and it was mostly fun, the quarter was pretty much a disaster results-wise, and consumed more than twice the planned effort. We also got knocked out of the NICKO. In addition to playing with David, I had 3 sessions with Albert, with mixed results, and one with Tony, which was not a success.
  2. The Highlights of the quarter were:-
    • Ranked Masters (Birmingham, Sat/Sun 27-28 February 2016): Played in the National Masters section with David. Got off to a cracking start, defeating two junior international pairs, had a disastrous second session, and indifferent thereafter. Ended up 8 / 12, 1.92 GPs gained. The second set was discussed in detail with Richard Granville and Marc Chawner.
    • National Masters Qualifiers (Barleylands, Sunday 13 March 2016): Dreadful first session, not fully reversed in the second set. Came 47 / 51 in the Eastern region (43.06%). Dire.
  3. I’ve continued supporting the ECBA website (Essex Contract Bridge Association) and now fully support Bernie’s new Website (First Class Bridge) as well as various sites for small clubs (Essex Bridge Results).
  4. I spent almost as much time on session reviews as playing. This needs to be kept in check. My conclusion is that – apart from the usual blunders on both sides – many bad boards are down to the Strong Diamond system “not fitting the hands”. This doesn’t mean it should change – there will be other boards where it does better.
  5. Discovered WBridge5 (WBridge5) and used it occasionally to practice counting the hand.
  6. Started to write "Todman (Theo) - Why Play Bridge?".
  7. I continue to steer clear of Essex bridge politics and haven’t attended recent committee meetings, which I found so annoying it distracted me from my philosophy. However, I intend to attend the next, and the AGM.
  8. Effort Expenditure: During 1Q16 I expended 184 hours on this project (262 hours YTD, where for “YTD” – Year to Date – I mean the (academic) year commencing in October 2015). That’s 202% of the planned effort, 154% YTD. Overall, 28% of my Project effort in the Quarter was directed towards this project (making 20% YTD) – as against 14% planned (13% YTD).
  9. Statistics: by partner and club-category can be obtained by following these links – for the last quarter and to date.
  10. Recent Results: Follow this link. Further information can be found from my Bridge_Page2.
  11. Local Points:
    • 28,310, bagged to date, including 777 Blue Points, 86.24 Green Points and 0.22 Gold Points3.
    • That still leaves me a Premier Regional Master. My next aim is to achieve National Master status (30,000 LPs, including 75 GPs) – so achieved as far as GPs are concerned, but still a little way to go for local points.
    • I think I had about 5,000 LPs from my student days, but never registered any, more’s the pity.
  12. EBU Grading:
    • The new scheme was introduced in March 2012, and my initial grading – at the end of a purple patch – of “Ace of Diamonds” – about 260th in the country and in the top 10 in Essex, was somewhat flattering.
    • Subsequently, things have declined a lot, and I meandered down from an “Ace of Clubs” to an “8”, though subsequently wandered back up to a “K”.
    • I dropped back down to a “Q” at the end of 2Q14, and by end 2014 dropped further to a “J”, despite a brief return to a K in 3Q14.
    • During 2015, when I only played about a dozen rateable games, my grade stayed pretty constant at a “J”.
    • In 1Q16 I’ve wandered back up to a “Q”.
    • Not that it’s at all accurate, and is somewhat volatile. See EBU: NGS for full details of the scheme.
  13. Summary of Progress to Date: I’ve hived off the history to a separate document4.
  14. Further Details: of time expenditure against task are given below, extracted from the relevant version of my Summary Task List5 (which is regularly updated between Quarterly Status Reports).

Plans for the Near Future:
  1. I intend to play twice a week in clubs, and in Essex competitions, so I’ve scheduled 14 hours a week throughout the coming quarter.
  2. I’ve asked Mike and Chris whether they are interested in an occasional game; yet to be confirmed. I’ll probably just continue playing twice weekly with David.
  3. To keep “within budget” it is essential that I don’t get involved in lengthy post-mortems.
  4. Complete a paper6 on “Why Play Bridge” – "Todman (Theo) - Why Play Bridge?".
