Status Reports
Status: Bridge (Progress to Date: 2023 - September)
(Text as at 04/10/2023 21:59:02)
A summary of results (from when I re-started playing bridge in December 2007 until end-September 2023) is:-
- Statistics: by partner and club-category can be obtained by following this link giving results to date (or this link for a complete list).
- Master Points:
- 37,5291, bagged to date, including 1,298 Blue Points and 107.39 Green Points.
- That makes me a National Master. My next milestone2 will be to achieve Premier National Master status (40,000 LPs, including 100 GPs) – so comfortably there as far as GPs are concerned, but still a long way to go for local points.
- EBU Grading:
- The new scheme was introduced in March 2012, and my initial grading – at the end of a purple patch – of “Ace of Diamonds” – about 260th in the country and in the top 10 in Essex, was somewhat flattering.
- Thereafter, things declined a lot, and I meandered down from an “Ace of Clubs” to an “8”, though subsequently wandered back up to a “K”.
- I dropped back down to a “Queen” at the end of 14Q2, and by end 2014 dropped further to a “Jack”, despite a brief return to a “King” in 14Q3.
- During 2015, when I only played about a dozen rateable games, my grade stayed pretty constant at a “Jack”.
- In 2016 I wandered back up to a “Queen” and initially stayed there – whenever I headed towards a “King”, some disaster happened. However, in 16Q3 my rating moved up to “Ace of Clubs”. This rise was mainly due to a good run with Colin, and the fact that he was rated artificially lowly given his time out from the game. My rating stayed at “Ace of Clubs” at the end of 2016, with a brief dip down to a “King” mid-4th-quarter.
- I maintained an “Ace of Clubs” grade in 17Q1, with a temporary rise to “Ace of Diamonds” – 7th in Essex & 250th in the country – mid-quarter. Unfortunately, my rating collapsed, and was down to a mid “Queen” by the time I stopped playing in mid-July 2017.
- Since I restarted playing in 18Q4 my grade had mostly continued to bob around the mid-“Queen” mark. However, my rating rose to a comfortable “King” in 19Q4 and I was a comfortable “Ace of Clubs” mid 20Q1, before settling at an irritating 0.01% below the “Ace of Clubs” level in mid-March, as a “King”, when all play stopped for the Covid shut-down.
- When play re-started in September 2021, I returned to an “Ace of Clubs”, but since end-April 2022 my grade has collapsed down to mid-“Queen”, as is evidenced by the graph to the right.
- Not that any of this is at all accurate, and it’s all somewhat volatile. See EBU: NGS for full details of the scheme. See above right for a graphic from the MyEBU website – this one taken on 3rd October 2023, which also shows the ratings of my various partnerships.
- Essex County Squad: While selected to form part of the “C” squad, I had declined to play since the 2013/14 season “for family reasons”. However, I was back in the team for the 2016/17 season and played twice with David. To my annoyance, I was still in the “C” team for 2017/18 – selected once with David and once with Colin. I’d hoped to be in the “B” team with Albert. I subsequently heard that Colin and I would be in the “B” Team for the Metropolitan Cup in October 2017, but I didn’t play, as I’d given up the game. I wasn’t selected for 2019/20 as I wasn’t playing when the squad was selected. I did reasonably well with David in the Warboys B Flight, however, so was selected and had agreed to be in the C squad (with David or Linda) for 2020/21. However, the season did not take place. I’ve subsequently said I’m not available.
List of Significant Events to end-September 2023
I have competed in the following national or county competitions:-
- 2023
- ECBA Club Pairs (Sunday 16th July 2023): with David Piper. For Mountnessing; with the Vedes as the second pair. Satisfactory. The team won, in a weak field.
- ECBA Handicap Pairs (Sunday 9th July 2023): with David Piper. Disaster – came bottom after the handicap, and not much better before.
- Essex Division 1 League Match (Monday 15th May 2023, evening, Barleylands): With Robert, versus Tony Verran’s Team. Lost 6-14. Partly due to no afternoon nap and a jolly meal and pint at the King’s Head. Wiped out in the first 12 boards (not all our fault) but recovered well in the second set.
- Essex Division 1 League Match (Monday 15th May 2023, afternoon, my house): With Robert, versus Peter Scotting’s Team, the eventual league winners. Won 16-4.
- ECBA Championship Pairs (Sunday 23rd April 2023): GP event, with David Piper. Came about half-way.
- 2022
- Nothing to report, as events were still re-opening – many still only on-line – and I had no intention of playing other than in Clubs for the time being.
- 2021
- The F2F bridge-world was mostly shut. There was the option to play our NICKO round 3 match on-line, but we chose to default.
- 2020
- National Pairs Heat (Barleylands, Sunday 15th March): Played with David. Woeful, though not a complete disaster. 16 / 20 locally. But it did take my rating back down to a K, just – 60.99%.
- ECATS SIMS (Thursday 5th March): Played with David. Pretty average locally, but better nationally; gained 113 LPs.
- Cornell Trophy (Barleylands, Sunday 16th February): Played with David, and with Linda & Coral. The team did OK, coming 11 / 19. We had an indifferent first set, but came top of the X-IMPs in the second.
- Woodham Ferrers Teams (Barleylands, Sunday 26th January): Played with David, and with Tim & Steve. Did OK, coming 5 / 9.
- NICKO Round 2 (Tuesday 21st January): Played with David, and Colin & Peter, for Mountnessing A. Won by 4 IMPs, but against last year’s winners3. 2 GPs gained. We’re seeded in the next round, but have still got the top Essex team!
- Warboys (Wednesdays 12th February & 11th March): David and I were invited to play in the A flight, but played poorly – 10 / 14 on both occasions.
- 2019
- NICKO Round 1 (Thursday 5th December): Played with David, and Colin & Peter, for Mountnessing A. Won by 10 IMPs, but against a rather weak team. 1 GP gained.
- ECATS CiN SIMS (Monday 11th November): Played with Linda. Gained 431 LPs.
- Essex/Herts Swiss Teams (Sunday 22nd September): Played with David, and Tim & Steve. Another triumph! The team was lying 2nd after winning our first 3 matches. We then lost narrowly to the eventual winners (all down to our team-mates choosing the wrong grand slam and our opponents the right one). Then we won our next two matches – narrowly against the Orams, but comprehensively against Marc Chawner’s team. Sadly, the wheels fell off in the last round, so instead of coming 2nd had we lost no worse than 6-14, we came 5 / 36. 1.58 GPs gained.
- Essex/Herts Swiss Pairs (Saturday 21st September): Played with David. Quite a triumph. We were lying 2nd after winning our first 3 matches, then lost our next 2, but finished strongly winning our last 2 matches 19-1 to end up 12 / 88 on 55.46%. 1.73 GPs gained.
- Essex/Herts Swiss Teams (Sunday 21st July): Played with David, and Tim & Steve. Rather a disaster, though this was largely down to our team-mates as David and my X-IMPs were slightly above flat, thereby exceeded our NGS ratings. Anyway, we won one match, drew one and lost 5, coming 33 / 42 and gaining only 0.38 GPs.
- Essex/Herts Swiss Pairs (Saturday 20th July): Played with David. Somewhat underwhelming, but we marginally exceeded our NGS, coming 63 / 98 on 48.6%, winning one match, drawing 3 and losing 3, gaining 0.63 GPs thereby.
- NICKO Plate Round 4 (Tuesday 9th July): Played with David, and Tim & Steve, for Mountnessing A. Got crushed by YCBC K – lost by 46 IMPs, most of which were mislaid in the first 12 boards.
- Warboys B Flight (Wednesdays 10/7, 14/8, 11/9): Played with David. A little better than last time (=0, +11, +19 IMPs) – on average about at our NGS-rating. My average for the season was +6.17 IMPs over 6 sessions, so came 8 / 27 qualifiers (see Warboys B-Flight 2019).
- NICKO Plate Round 3 (Tuesday 21st May): Played with David, and Tim & Steve, for Mountnessing A and narrowly defeated a very strong Loughton team.
- Essex Pairs (Sunday 14th April): Very disappointing. Played with David and got crushed in the qualifiers (26 / 28, 36.7%) and did badly (9 / 13, 49.2%) – though approximately as expected based on our NGS grades – in the Consolation Final.
- Warboys B Flight (Wednesdays 10th April, 8th May & 12th June): Played with David. Further disappointment (+6, +9, -9 IMPs) – all 3 session slightly below our NGS-rating.
- ECBA League Division 2 (Tuesdays 16th & 30th April, Thursday 2nd May): Played with David, and Tim & Steve. We lost all 3 matches badly (19-1 twice and 16-4 once), and the team got relegated, not that we care as we weren’t intending to play next year.
- 2017
- London Swiss Teams (YCBC, Sunday 16th July, with Albert; Peter & Pat as team-mates): 6th out of 274 in a very strong field. 1 GP gained
- Essex “C” vs Cambs & Hunts (Sunday 2nd July): With David. Pretty abject. The team lost 0-20, and David and I were -32 Butler-IMPs, for no good reason.
- ECBA Club Pairs (Sunday 4th June), with Colin, representing Hutton. Came 3 / 17 and the team came top.
- ECBA Championship Pairs (Sunday 23rd April), with Albert. Dismal. Came 20 / 30 in the qualifier and 7 / 21 in the Consolation Final.
- EBU Easter Championship Pairs (Friday / Sat 14-15th April), with Colin. A mixed bag. Got off to a great start, then had a middling second session and wilted in the third. Overall, about par for our ratings. 68 / 109, 48.65%, 1.23 GPs gained.
- ECBA Teams of 4 Final (Monday 3rd April 2017), with David, Albert & Chris T. We were playing Marc Chawner’s team and got crushed – we conceded after 24 boards. Still, a good run.
- ECBA League Div 2: Played 4 matches (with David, and TC+SE). Won two comfortable, against County A-standard teams, but lost two against County C-standard teams – one badly.
- National Pairs Eastern Heat (Sun 12th March, Barleylands): Played with David. Did badly in the first session and worse in the second. Ended up on 44.5%, 45 / 52.
- Ipswich Swiss Pairs (4th March): Not really a success. Played with Colin, coming 14 / 50 on 79 / 140 VPs, but underperformed our rating. Won 3 matches & lost 4. 0.75 GPs gained.
- Ranked Masters – National Masters Pairs (W/E 25-26 Feb, Birmingham): with David. Disappointing, though we out-performed our rating and gained 1.5 GPs. Had a disastrous first session, but were positive in the other three, and ended up 9 / 14 on -8 IMPs.
- Cornell Trophy (Sun 12th Feb, Ingatestone), with Colin. A reasonable result for Hutton A (with DV & DC). Came 7 / 23. Marginally under-performed our ratings.
- ECBA Teams of 4 Semi-Final (Friday 27th January 2017), with David, Albert & Chris T. Comfortable victory. 1.25 GPs gained.
- NICKO Round 2 (Monday 16th January 2017); with David, Alaric & Chris M. Versus the de Botton team, last year’s winners! Sadly lost by 14 IMP, though we were up at half time. Hinged on one disastrous board in the final set (not our fault!).
- Woodham BP Swiss Pairs (21st Jan, Barleylands): with Colin. Very disappointing. 12 / 26 on 70 / 140 VPs. Won 4 matches & lost 3. 0.44 BPs gained.
- ECBA Swiss Pairs (Sunday 8th January 2017, Barleylands), with Colin. Quite a success. 7 / 37 on 72 / 120 VPs. 4 matches won, 2 lost. 1.62 BPs gained.
- 2016
- EBU Y/E Swiss Pairs (London, Tues/Weds 26-27th December 2016). Played with Colin and slightly out-performed expectations based on our ratings. Came 52 / 122; won 5, drew 1 and lost 5 matches. 1.83 GPs gained. We had a tough run against some very strong pairs.
- NICKO Round 1 (Barleylands, Thursday 17th November 2016). Played with David (and Tim & Steve) for Mountnessing A. Convincingly beat another Essex team. 1 GP gained.
- CiN SIMS (Woodham, Monday 14th November 2016). Played with David and came 154 / 2,559 nationally and gained 591 LPs.
- ECBA Fletcher Trophy (Ingatestone, Sunday 30th October 2016), playing for Hutton with David. The team was too weak, and came bottom, of 12. David and my Butlers were minus 35, so it did damage to my rating too.
- ECBA Teams of 4 KO, R2 (Woodford, Thurs 27th October 2016), with David, Chris & Albert. Won convincingly; 0.75 GPs gained.
- Felixstowe Pairs (Saturday 1st October 2016). A disaster, the first with Colin since his return. We failed to qualify for the main final (20/33; 47.9%), and did even worse in the Consolation Final (14/20; 45.24%). Thankfully the sessions weren’t submitted to the EBU for NGS-rating.
- Essex / Herts Swiss Teams (Ware, Sun 25th September 2016): With David and the Burtts. A poor performance. 21 / 27. Won 2 matches, Drew 1 and lost 4. 0.63 GP earned. David and I were -15 on the Butlers, so our NGS rating went down as well.
- ECBA Switch KO, Round 1 (Albert’s house, Friday 2nd September 2016): My team (myself, David, Albert & Chris) was eliminated by last season’s winners.
- Essex / Herts Swiss Teams (Ware, Sun 24th July 2016): With David, Tim and Steve. A fairly weak performance. 27 / 53. Won 3 matches, Drew 1 and lost 3. 0.88 GP earned. However, David and I had flat Butlers, so our NGS rating went up!
- Essex / Herts Swiss Pairs (Ware, Sat 23rd July 2016): A mediocre – and NGS-par – performance. 52 / 108 on 50.51%. Won 3 matches and lost 4. 0.88 GP earned.
- Essex “C” vs Norfolk (Roydon, Sun 3rd July 2016): The team drew, so we got 0.25 GP, but our Butler score was -5 IMPs.
- Essex “C” vs Bedfordshire (Barleylands, Sun 3rd April 2016): The team won, so we got 0.5 GP, but our Butler score was flat.
- Ranked Masters (Birmingham, Sat/Sun 27-28 February 2016): Played in the National Masters section with David. Got off to a cracking start, defeating two junior international pairs, had a disastrous second session, and indifferent thereafter. Ended up 8 / 12, 1.92 GPs gained. The second set was discussed in detail with Richard Granville and Marc Chawner.
- National Masters Qualifiers (Barleylands, Sunday 13 March 2016): Dreadful first session, not fully reversed in the second set. Came 47 / 51 in the Eastern region (43.06%). Dire.
- 2015
- CiN SIMS (Thursday 12th November 2015, at Bernie’s): Played with David against very weak opposition and came 4 / 2,106 on 68.5% nationally, grabbing about 700 useful LPs.

- 2014
- Crockfords Round 1 (Thursday 13th November 2014): Played with David (with Gad C + Paul Y). A close match, won by 11 IMPs. 2GP gained.
- NICKO Round 1: Thursday 6th November 2014; Played with David (and Tim C + Steve E) against a strong Hertford Team, and – after a disastrous first half – came back strongly to win by 2 IMPs. 1 GP gained.
- EBU Seniors Swiss Teams: Sunday 3rd November 2014; David and I teamed up with Dennis V and John S. We won our first 4 matches, but then struggled, winning only 1 of the last 3. Still, we ended 16 / 56, so not too bad. 1,25 GPs gained.
- EBU Seniors Swiss Pairs: Birmingham, Friday / Saturday 1st – 2nd November 2014; David and I had disastrous qualifying sessions: 64 / 68 (42.65%) and 21 / 25 (43.11%), so didn’t qualify for anything. We did averagely in the Swiss Pairs: 39 / 74 (50.18%; winning 3 matches, drawing 2 and losing 2; 1.12 GP gained).
- Essex / Herts Swiss Teams: Sunday 29th September 2014; Mike and I played with the Mollisons, and after being placed 2nd at half-time, slumped to in the second half. Ended up 16 /39 on 74 / 140 VP. Mike & I were on -3 Cross-IMPs, NGS 49.61%, winning 3 matches, losing 3 and drawing one. 0.88 GP gained.
- Essex / Herts Swiss Pairs: (Sunday 28th September 2014). David and I played poorly and came 54 / 66 on 46.34%, winning 2 matches and losing 5, including the last 3. 0.5 GP gained.

- Portland Pairs (Sunday 23rd March), with Angie. A poor showing, coming 27 / 40 on 46.36%.
- Ipswich Swiss Pairs (Saturday 8th March), with Mike. We didn’t “fire”, and came 47 / 58 on 47.54%, winning 2 matches but losing 5 (including the last 3). Only 0.5 GPs gained.
- Cornell Trophy (Essex Teams of 4, Sunday 23rd February), with David (the other pair being David and Fran) and came 9 / 23. We would have been 7th apart from an outrageous ruling that adjusted one of our scores from +50 to -800.

- NICKO round 3 (Monday 10th February) with David (Mike & Catriona being the other pair). Lost by 39 IMPs playing. Not our fault, I don’t think.

- EBU Year-End Congress (30/12/2011): Played with David (+ AS & LenW) in the Swiss Teams. Not very successful – 63 / 109, 0.75 GP.
- Middlesex Congress (19-20/11/2011, Barnet): Played with David in the Swiss Pairs and (with LS & IM) in the Swiss Teams. Not a great success – 32 / 60 (0.75 GP) in the Pairs, 37 / 64 (0.75 GP) in the Teams.
- Essex League (03/11/2011): Played in two Division 2 matches with Linda (+TC & SE) – won one & lost the other.
- Essex Seniors (Thornwood Common, Wednesday 26/10/2011): Played with David. Not bad as the standard is quite high – 12 / 30 on 53.3%.
- NICKO (20/10/11): Played with David (+CL & MH). Lost by 2 IMP to Colchester “B”.
- Essex Cup for Clubs (Navestockside, Sunday 16/10/2011): Played for Hutton with Keith (+ AM & AF). Again, a good first session, followed by a collapse. Ended 7 / 10.
- Great Northern Swiss Pairs (Leeds, 01-02/10/2011): Played with Dave. Not as successful as we’d expected – had a nasty “dip” mid-way after a good start. Ended up 68 / 123, 1.5 GP.
- Hertfordshire Swiss Teams: Played with David (plus LS & IM) on 25th September 2011. Not particularly successful – won 3 matches and lost 4, for 0.75 GPs.
- Metropolitan Cup: Played with Angie on 10th September 2011 in the Essex “C” team (with the McGuffins, as the “C” sub-team!). We did fine, and the Essex “C” team of 3 sub-teams came 2nd.(of 9) overall.
- Brighton Swiss Pairs: competed with Dave over 12-14th August 2011. Had a remarkable late run after a difficult start and came 40 / 358. Won bonus GPs for the first time – 5.52 in total, including 1.1 Gold Points.
- EBU Easter Congress: Played with Angie on 25th April 2011 in the “A” Flight Swiss Pairs, which was very tough. We had a creditable first session, but after a disastrous second session, ended up 158 / 162, drawing one match and losing the other 6. In the first session we lost 9-11 to the Tams, when we should have won; put up a good fight against Janet De Botton and Thor Eric Hofstaniska; and also played well against a pair of junior internationals; and drew the last match. I think this wore us out as we got hammered in the last two rounds when you’d expect to be picking up points against the also-rans.
- Harrogate Swiss Pairs: Played with Dave on 25th – 26th February 2011. Won 5 / 9 matches against good opposition, and ended up 60 / 186. 1.4 GP Gained.
- Harrogate Open Pairs: Played with Dave on 25th February 2011 as a warm-up to the main event. A bit of a disaster – 22 / 29 on 43.2%.
- Essex Swiss Pairs: Played with Colin at Navestockside on Sunday 9th January 2011. We won 3 of our 6 matches, but the wins were narrower than the losses, so we came a disappointing 30 / 36.
- 2010
- EBU Year-end GP Swiss Pairs: Monday 27th December 2010. This was a disappointment as we had to withdraw after the first session as Colin had toothache. We’d won two of our four matches, having won the first 19-1 against an Essex pair, then losing narrowly to a pair of junior internationals from Cambridge, and to the pair who ultimately came 2nd, before beating another top pair. Only 0.5 GP gained, therefore.
- Middlesex GP Swiss Pairs: Played on Saturday 27th November 2010. A tough competition, as usual. Colin and I won our first two matches, then came up against the big guns and only won one further match, so came 97 / 123. Only 0.75 GP gained, therefore.
- Fletcher Trophy: Played in the Essex inter-club Teams of Eight championships with Colin on Sunday 10th October 2010, representing Hutton; we just about managed to hold our end up, and the team scraped home in first place.
- Felixstowe Congress: Played on Saturday 2nd October 2010 with Colin in the GP Pairs. Got hammered in the qualifiers, coming 62 / 64 on 36%, but then won a trophy in the Consolation Final coming top on 66.5%!
- EBU Summer Congress – Brighton, August 2010. This was a great experience, but results-wise was rather disappointing. The standard seemed to be much higher than last year – Colin and I got off to a good start – good enough to get on the back-page of the Bulletin after the first day, anyway. But thereafter, the going got tough – usually the case after a good start in a Swiss tournament. So, we ended up 268 / 352 having won 5, drawn 2 and lost 8 of our matches, for 1.5 GP.
- Essex/Herts Swiss Pairs: Played with Colin on Saturday 24th July 2010. Got off to an excellent start and got to tables 3 and 2, but then lost our way a bit and ended rather disappointingly 41 / 108, with 1 GP earned – having won three, lost three and drawn one of our matches.
- Sussex Swiss Pairs: Played with Colin at Ardingly on Saturday 15th May 2010. Better than last year (with a different partner), but disappointing. Won 3 of 7 matches for 0.75 GPs. Came 70 / 108.
- Helliar Trophy: I was unexpectedly asked to substitute and play with Dennis, with Colin and Peter making up the other half of the team. The first session was tough, but we were 12 IMPs up (no thanks to me and Dennis). The second half saw us fall away badly (again, no thanks to me and Dennis) and we ended up –51 IMPs, 20/22. A disgrace; which saw me sacked as Dennis’s partner in the Essex Seniors (rather undeserved, I thought, not that I wanted to play in any case).
- Portland Pairs, March 2010: Played at Welwyn with Margaret. It’s a national Mixed Pairs competition, and was an enjoyable day and good experience. The first session was tough, but we did the best of the Essex pairs in our heat. Unfortunately, we got absolutely slaughtered in the session after lunch, and ended up 40 / 41 on just over 40%.
- EBU Easter Swiss Pairs, April 2010. Not bad. Colin and I played with the big boys in the “A” flight. We came just over half-way – 71 / 144 on 50%. We came up against some international players, beating one and outranked several. Collected 0.75 GPs for winning 3 or our 7 matches, all of our defeats being fairly close.
- Essex Pairs, April 2010: Rather disappointing – played with Margaret, and came just below half-way in both the Qualifiers and Consolation Final.
- Essex Pairs, April 2010: Rather disappointing – played with Margaret, and came just below half-way in both the Qualifiers and Consolation Final.

- Nicko, Saturday 6th February 2010: The 3rd Round match against Clare A was a complete disaster. I thought Margaret and I held our end up well, but we still lost 104-13.
- National Pairs heats, January 2010. Played with Colin at Mountnessing. The competition was very tough, and we got off to a dreadful start, so ending up 12/19 on just under 50% was quite creditable.
- 2009
- EBU Year End Congress Mixed Pairs, December 2009. The first half of the first session went well, but it was all down-hill from there on. Margaret and I ended up 72nd / 76 on 42.63%. It was very tough, with some international partnerships. Not flighted and not Swiss, so probably not a good idea to have entered.
- EBU Year End Congress Swiss Pairs, December 2009. Colin and I won 6 matches and lost 5, and winning the Non-expert Prize and 1.5 GPs for coming 67th / 166.
- Essex Mixed Pairs, Sunday 6th December 2009. Margaret & I had a dreadful first session, but an excellent second session, leaving us 11th / 26, on 51.8%, which was quite creditable.
- Middlesex Congress, Saturday 14th November 2009. Margaret and I played OK other than being hammered in the last match, so we gained 0.75 GP for winning 3 / 7 matches, coming 78 / 106.
- Essex “Play with an Expert”, Sunday 29th November 2009. My attempt to impersonate an Expert was something of a success. After careful system preparation beforehand, Russell and I were in top spot on 64% at the break, but were pipped into second place by the final whistle, 2 / 26 with 61%.
- NICKO (Round 1), Monday 9th November 2009. Represented Mountnessing “C” (Margaret and I, with Len and Angie) and had a surprise victory, defeating a strong Colchester team by 2 IMPs after being slaughtered in the first half. We earned a GP, and have a bye into the 3rd Round.
- Felixstowe Congress on Saturday 10th October 2009. A reasonable result with Colin. Just missed the cut for the Pairs final, coming 15 / 40 with 52.21%, but did OK in the Consolation Final, coming 5 / 26 with 59.09% and earning 1.25 GPs.
- EBU Swiss Pairs at Brighton, August 2009. Margaret and my first venture to the premier national Pairs competition was a bit of a struggle, but of our 14 matches we won 6 and drew 1, coming 303 / 436. Got the 1.75 GPs I needed to make Premier Master.
- Hertfordshire Swiss Pairs at Ware, Saturday 18th July 2009. After a very poor start, Margaret and I ended up 77th / 108 with 0.75 GPs.
- Sussex Swiss Pairs, 16th May 2009. Not a success. Margaret and I lost our first 5 matches and were relegated to the “sin bin”, where we drew the 6th and won the last. So, we came away with 0.5 GP and came 100 / 108, with 32.14% (as calculated by VPs – ie. on average we lost 13.5 – 6.5, so our average MPs %age was something like 44.5%).
- Essex Pairs (19th April 2009). Very disappointing, much as last year. Margaret and I narrowly failed to qualify for the Final (21/39, 50.2%), then were thrashed in the Consolation Final (21/24, 43.94%).
- EBU Easter Congress in London (13th April 2009) in the “B” Flight Swiss Pairs. Margaret and I didn’t do too badly – at least when compared with last year – 2 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses (no thrashings) – ended up with 1 GP and 15/27 (48.57%).
- 2008
- Essex Mixed Pairs (7th December 2008). Margaret and I started off OK, coming 5/13 in the first section, but collapsed in the second, coming 17/27 overall.
- Middlesex Congress (15-16th November 2008). Margaret and I came a respectable 46 / 114 in the Pairs. The Teams event was a disaster, and we were lucky not to have come bottom. 1 GP for a full weekend’s work is a poor return.
- Felixstowe Congress (October 11-12th 2008). The pairs was quite a success – Margaret and I were the only Essex pair to qualify for the finals, coming 3rd in our section, and though we didn’t exactly shine in the finals, weren’t disgraced, coming 13/18 and picked up 1 GP. Unfortunately, the teams didn’t go so well – we won 4 of our seven matches, but came below half-way.
- SIMS of 9th October 2008: Margaret and I came 13th out of 2,168 nationally, playing in the Mountnessing “Blue” section. This garnered 1 GP and 550 local points.
- Essex/Herts Congress (19th-20th July 2008). Margaret and I did well, all things considered, coming second in the Non-Expert category in the pairs (35 / 116 overall), and 39/59 in the teams. 1.75 GPs won.
- Essex Pairs competition (6th April 2008). Margaret and I did tolerably well in the qualifying session, fairly narrowly failing to qualify for the final. However, we then collapsed in the Consolation Event, coming 17/20 on 39.17%. Rather dismal.
- EBU London Easter Congress (24th March 2008). Margaret and I had hoped to play in the “C” flight of the Swiss Pairs, but this was cancelled, so we had to play in the more forbidding “B” flight. The end result was a disaster, but it might have been worse. We lost our first 5 matches, and were in last place when the last round commenced. Thankfully, we won our last two matches and scraped into 37th place (out of 40). So, only 0.5 GPs won.
- EBU National Newcomers Pairs (16th March 2008). Martin and I only just qualified for such an event (being “newcomers” only according to the letter of the law). We came out a fairly creditable 28th of 222 nationally (creditable since Martin hadn’t played bridge for 2 years, and we hadn’t played together for 18 years). My first 1.75 GPs won.
Other Activities
- I have written a card-dealing program and generated a website with the results. In 1Q11 I enhanced this for determining opening bids using the Strong Diamond system.
- Completed a paper “Why Play Bridge?5”.
- In September 2012 I became a founding committee-member of a group looking to consolidate a number of clubs in the Brentwood area into a confederation with rented / owned accommodation. I dropped out sometime in 2013, and the project is in any case defunct, but until end 2017 I continued to collect stats on local clubs.
- As of September 2021, I am Secretary of the Mountnessing DBC.

In-Page Footnotes:
Footnote 1:
- There’s a slight discrepancy between my records and the EBU stats.
- When the EBU had 33,776, my calculations had 33,915, made up of 22,962 LPs, 1,175 BPs and 100.06 GPs.
- I’ve not been bothered to determine the reason for the discrepancy, nor repeated the comparison as when I’m playing regularly timing issues also play a part. However, I have written a reconciliation program, but haven’t sorted out the discrepancies yet.
- I think I had about 5,000 LPs from my student days, but never registered any, more’s the pity.
- My Gold Points have now “aged off”.
Footnote 2:
- I no longer intend to “aim” to climb the greasy pole, but simply to enjoy the game.
Footnote 3:
- Against YCBC (Andrew McIntosh, Neil Rosen, James Thrower and Ali Ahmed).
- The first 12 boards were voided as despite both our pairs having an excellent set, we both played the same hands!
- So, the match was reduced to 12 boards. I thought I’d blown it on the last hand, going for 800 in a freely-bid game; but we’d made a thin 3NT earlier, so it was OK.
Footnote 4:
- Our NGS rating was disappointingly flat. This was a major factor in my deciding to give up the game (temporarily).
- The key hand was one where Albert and I correctly stopped in 5S, missing HAK, but got a terrible X-IMPs score on the board as many declarers were in slam, making, and one in 7Sxx making. The hand on opening lead had HKxxx, so didn’t lead Hs, and the H losers went away.
