Criteria of Identity

(For earlier versions of this Note, see the table at the end)

I’m not sure whether I’ll have much more to say under this head than under the topic of Persistence1 Criteria. For the moment, I just note that there are two categories of criterion: metaphysical and epistemological. Metaphysical criteria are those that, if they obtain, establish identity irrespective of whether anyone knows about them. Epistemological criteria reflect how we that identity obtains. I suspect David Shoemaker – in "Shoemaker (David) - Personal Identity and Immortality" of confusing the two (despite his explicit acknowledgement of the distinction) in his rejection of the soul criterion.

David Shoemaker considers the following possibilities:-

  1. Soul2 Criterion
  2. Body3 Criterion
  3. Memory4 Criterion
  4. Brain5-based Memory Criterion
  5. Psychological6 Criterion
  6. Biological7 Criterion
The first four feature in "Shoemaker (David) - Personal Identity and Immortality", the second two in "Shoemaker (David) - Personal Identity, Rational Anticipation, and Self-Concern". In "Shoemaker (David) - Personal Identity and Self-Regarding Ethics - Alternative Approaches" he considers two other alternatives:-
  1. Narrative8 Identity, and
  2. Identity Doesn’t Matter9.

This is mostly a place-holder10. Currently, just see the categorised reading-list (if any).
